40TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATED BY LVOC ON MAY 11, 2007
On Friday, May 11, 2007, Literacy Volunteers of Ontario County officially celebrated its 40th Anniversary. A wine/dessert reception was held in the ballroom of the beautiful Ramada Inn on the Lake in Geneva, NY. More than 130 adult learners, tutors, volunteers, and friends of literacy attended the gala affair. Those who had spent a number of years as volunteers with LVOC and had exhibited outstanding service were presented awards by the Director, Linda J. Proctor, and the President of the organization, Janet L. King. In addition, two very special awards were presented by the Rotary Club of Canandaigua, which sponsored the event. Members of the club presented two individuals connected with LVOC a Paul Harris Fellow, which is the most prestigious and coveted award given by Rotary International. One of the recipients was LVOC Director Linda J. Proctor. Keynote speaker for the anniversary party was John Zickefoose, a former adult literacy leaner, and currently the director of community service for the Corona Public Library in Corona, California. He is also a member of the board of directors of ProLiteracy of which LVOC is an accredited affiliate. John's topic was, "Never Give Up," which also was the theme of the anniversary celebration.
